About the Club

The Gem & Mineral Society of Syracuse was formed in 1951 to stimulate community interest in mineralogy, paleontology and the lapidary arts.

We are a community of individuals with interests that include collecting, identification and display of minerals and fossils, and the many aspects of jewelry design and fabrication. Our goal is to stimulate Community interest in Mineralogy, Paleontology and the Lapidary Arts.

Membership Benefits:

  • Regular monthly meetings stimulate the club’s social and educational aspects. General Membership Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 7:30 pm., excluding July, August and December, when other club functions take it's place. We meet at the club house in Shoppingtown Mall, 2nd Floor. Directions to Shoppingtown (3649 Erie Boulevard East, Dewitt) are available from Google Maps.
  • The Marie Cole Skill Center provides members with access to a variety of lapidary equipment and classes on how to use it to make components for jewelry and other designs.
  • Scheduled field trips during the spring and summer months providing collectors with opportunities to find specimens as well as visiting area geologic sites such as: Clark Reservation, Taughannock Falls, Letchworth State Park etc.
  • Our monthly newsletter, The CRACK ’N CAB, keeps members informed about the society's programs and activities.
  • Biannual auctions give members a chance to acquire new material while supporting the club. Auctions occur at the regular member meetings in May and October. Rules are available at the bottom of the page.
  • An extensive lending library is available for member's use.
  • Lapidary and mineral display contests give members a chance to share their work/collections with others in the spirit of friendly competition. Rules are available at the bottom of the page.
  • The club has both formal and informal affiliations with other regional and national organizations that share our interests.

To become a member download button our membership form (PDF format) and bring it to the next meeting. Annual Membership dues are $10 for adults, $5 for juniors (under 18) and $15 for families. Renewals are due each September.

Our Executive board meets the 1st Tuesday of each month from 7-9 pm. The board meets at our club house in Shoppingtown. All members are permitted and encouraged to attend a Board Meeting. Please contact the President in advance to add an item to the agenda.
